Pg 1-50
Diction :
"infinite" (chbosky 39)
I think chbosky chose this word because it indicates that charlie finally feels like he has friends. And that he feels like he can live forever, because the moment was so perfect. Using the word infinite conveyed Charlies feelings.
" he is just stern sometimes " (Chbosky 26)
I think Chbosky chose this word because it indicates that his family is very strict. And that his father does not like many things, or show many emotion.
Tone:
The tone in pages 1-50 is very reflective because his aunt Helen died and he is talking about how she was a great impact in his life. And how she loved him as much as he loved her. He talks about how he missed her so much.
Figurative Language:
An example of figurative language is the metaphor, "... Sam stood up, and the wind turned her dress into ocean waves." (Chbosky 38) The author uses a metaphor to compare Sam's dress to ocean waves.
An example of imagery is "When we hit the tunnel, all the sound got scooped up into a vacuum, and it was replaced by a song on the tape player." (Chobsky 38) The author uses imagery to create a mental picture in the readers head.
Pages 50-100
Diction:
"I meant beautiful in all ways" (Chbosky 69)
I believe Chbosky used this word choice to explain how Charlie thinks of Sam, but he describes it as she is beautiful inside and out. This indicates that Charlie has feelings for Sam.
" I love you." (Chbosky 69)
Chbosky uses the word love to describe Charlie's feelings towards Sam. Also to describe Charlie's courage because Charlie finally had the nerve to say that to Sam.
Tone:
Chbosky sets a frivolous tone through his careless behavior. He begins to party, and is unaware of his surroundings. He begins not to care about his decisions, and his actions.
Figurative Language:
An example of figurative language is a simile, " ...dumb as a post." (Chbosky 51) he uses the simile to compare his brother being dumb like a post. He is trying to create a better picture for the readers to realize that his brother is really dumb.
An example of figurative language is personification. "And my mind played hopscotch." (Chbosky 98) he is referring to his mind playing hopscotch. He didn't mean his mind literally playing hopscotch, he meant it by saying he was unsure about his decision.
Pages 100-213
Diction:
"Its all a very sad daze." (Chbosky 116)
I think Chbosky chose this word choice to emphasize on how sad he really was. Because him and his sister had to hide the fact that she could possibly be pregnant. This conveys the emotion for him and his sister.
"She wasn't bitter..." (Chbosky 198)
Chbosky chose this word choice to explain Sam's feelings about her boyfriend cheating on her. This explains how she felt towards the mistake Craig made.
Figurative Language:
Again, Chbosky uses a simile. " You're white as a sheet." (Chbosky 203) Sam uses a simile to describe him as white as a sheet. This simile compares his color to a white sheet.
Chbosky uses imagery "This one kid with the crooked teeth..." (Chbosky 196) to create a picture in the readers mind that a kid with crooked teeth, was talking to him. Chbosky uses imagery because he wants the readers to visually imagine the kid with the crooked teeth.
Tone:
Chbosky uses a mournful tone in pages 100-213 because his only friends that are seniors are graduating. And he realizes that the next school year is going to be way different because none of his friends are here to support him.
